چکیده

The DAISY system is currently used as the alternative reading format for print-disabled students in Norway. DAISY is denoted by many as universally designed. This is an important claim, ensuring suited learning opportunities for all students. Thus, to be able to determine this aspect of DAISY is important – as is the case for many information systems. However, methods for evaluating whether a software product is universally designed are lacking. This text builds on previous work investigating the use of DAISY in Norwegian primaryand secondary education, now looking into strategies to evaluate whether DAISY is universally designed. We argue that the term universally designed needs to be more strictly defined in order to become applicable to systems development. Further, we propose two related methods that measure to what degree DAISY is universally designed, using feature analysis methodology.

On Assessing the Costs and Benefits of Universal Design of ICT.

In the ICT and IT domains, Universal Design is typically viewed as a burden and an expense, and its application is often justified only by ethics and/or legislation. Advocates for Universal Design (UD) are arguing that it is cost-effective, but so far there are few studies that document this in a detailed way. In this work, we discuss related research and studies dealing with the costs and bene...

Universal Design: A Step toward Successful Aging

The concept of aging successfully has become increasingly important as demographics shift towards an aging population. Successful aging has been defined to include (1) a low probability of disease and disease-related disability; (2) a high level of physical and cognitive functioning; and (3) an active engagement in life. The built environment can create opportunities or constraints for seniors ...

Designing for Success: Developing Engineers Who Consider Universal Design Principles

Engineers must design for a diverse group of potential users of their products; however, engineering curricula rarely include an emphasis on universal design principles. This research article details the effectiveness of a design project implemented in a first-year engineering course in an effort to raise awareness of the need for engineers to be more inclusive when designing. Students were ask...

Design, Evaluation and Prototyping of a New Robotic Mechanism for Ultrasound Imaging

This paper presents a new robotic mechanism for ultrasound imaging. The device is placed on a patient's body by an operator, and an ultrasound expert controls the motions of the device to obtain ultrasound images. The paper focuses on the robotic mechanism that performs ultrasound imaging. The design of the mechanism is based on two approaches to produce center of motion for an ultrasound probe...

Robust Anti-Windup Control Design for PID Controllers–Theory and Experimental Verification

This paper addresses an approximation-based anti-windup (AW) control strategy for suppressing the windup effect caused by actuator saturation nonlinearity in proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controlled systems. The effect of actuator constraint is firstly regarded as a disturbance imported to the PID controller. The external disturbance can then be modeled by a linear differential equatio...
